My name is Kidist and I am 25 and am Ethiopian.  I work as a hairstylist and makeup artist. My hubby and I met through mutual friends. He popped the question by making plans with my friends to take me to one of dallas’s iconic site and when I got there he was already there on bended knee. I was so excited that I was going to be married soon!

When I woke up on my wedding my day I was so happy and excited for the whole day to begin. Everything was perfect from my dream dress to my amazing bridesmaids by my side I was smiling from ear to ear. I picked mint green and purple for the color palette because those are my favorite colors.  I did feel emotional though when I walked down the aisle as my dad passed away when I was younger and he wasn’t there to give me away.

When decorating the venue I wanted to exude elegance.  When we walked in I was super happy with it because it turned out great with draping and uplighting. We didn’t have a first dance because we had a religious pentecostal wedding.  We wanted to praise God in our special day and we did! The most memorable moment of the night having our friends and family around us. One thing I wish a Habesha bride would have told me is that bowing during the gulbet mesam (knee kissing) was hard with wearing a tight dress to say bye to the family before exiting the reception.

For the Melse the habesha elements that were a must for me was the coffee ceremony. I had my kems designed by one of my friends.  I wanted a modern saba kemis with red accents on the tillet. I picked the same thing for my bridal party because I wanted it to go with my kemis. My favorite part of the night was doing the dabo sim ceremony where my new name was picked.  One piece of advice that I would give to current brides is do your Melse the way you want.  Tradition is very important but still try to make it your own. Good Luck!
